The Psychiatry E/M Coding Curriculum: 2021

This curriculum will teach you everything you need to know about how to apply the 2021 E/M guidelines to psychiatry E/M services.  The 2021 guidelines apply only to new and established office patients.  All other encounters continue to utilize the 1997 E/M guidelines, which are covered by this curriculum as well. The three courses in this curriculum will teach you to code and document all of your encounters with confidence in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.

Office-Based Psychiatry Services: 2021
This course will walk you step-by-step through the 2021 E/M guidelines as they pertain to office-based psychiatry services.  The 2021 guidelines offer a completely new paradigm for documenting new and established office visits.   There are different rules for coding based on time and a new methodology for calculating the medical decision-making.  Using real-life clinical examples, this module will show you how to select the correct level of care and how to streamline your documentation using the new rules.  The codes for initial psychiatric evaluation, psychotherapy and E/M + psychotherapy in the outpatient setting will also be discussed.

Hospital-Based Psychiatry E/M Services
This course covers hospital-based psychiatry E/M services.  Although the rules have changed in 2021 for new and established office visits, hospital-based psychiatry E/M services will continue to be billed and documented using the 1997 E/M guidelines.   Using clinical examples, this course will show how to select the correct level of care for the most common hospital encounters using the 1997 E/M guidelines.  The rules for initial psychiatric evaluation, psychotherapy and E/M + psychotherapy in the hospital setting will also be discussed.

The Basic E/M Coding Course: Psychiatry
This course is a survey of the 1997 E/M guidelines as they pertain to psychiatry.  The 1997 rules will continue to be operative for all encounters other than new and established office patients in 2021, so it is important to understand how the key components of documentation fit together for psychiatry patients.  Using clinical examples, you will learn what is needed for each level of history, exam and medical decision-making using the 1997 guidelines.
