The Outpatient E/M Coding Curriculum: 2024 Update
E/M Coding Update (2024): Learn about the most recent E/M coding updates for 2024 There is new convention for times assigned to new and established office visits. There is also new guidance regarding billing for split/shared services (different rules for the AMA vs. Medicare). The biggest news for 2024 is that the new G code for medical complexity and/or primary care (G2211) goes live on January 1, 2024. This code will compensate physicians for performing primary care and for addressing complex medical problems on a longitudinal basis and pays about $16.

New Office Patients: Learn how the most recent 2023 E/M coding updates will impact the documentation for new office patients. Learn how to calculate your medical decision-making and add up the time spent so you can select the correct level of care for each visit. The lowest level of care (99201) has been deleted, leaving us with four levels of care for these visits. This course uses clinical examples to illustrate exactly how to recognize the correct level of care and then shows, step-by-step, how to document each visit.

Established Office Visits: These are the most common E/M encounters on the planet. Learn how the most recent E/M coding updates will affect the documentation for these visits. Did you know that if you can recognize the clinical circumstances when it would be appropriate to go from a level-3 established office visit to a level-4 established office visit, you would increase your reimbursement by 41%? This course shows how to add up your time and quantify your medical decision-making, so you can always select the correct level of care for these visits. The most recent guidance on reporting prolonged services in conjunction with these encounters is also discussed.

Outpatient Consult Services: Medicare may not pay for outpatient consult services, but some private insurers still do. For the first time, consult E/M services may be documented using the 2021 E/M guidelines. The level-1 outpatient consult code (99241) has been deleted, which leaves us with four levels of care for these services. The previous requirements for specific levels of history and physical exam have been discarded. The level of care is now driven by time or by the medical decision-making required for the visit. These courses will show you how to calculate your medical decision-making so you can always select the correct code for these visits. Using clinical examples, we illustrate how to document each level of care for outpatient consult services.

This course will show you how to calculate your medical decision-making so you can always select the correct code for these services. Using clinical examples, we illustrate how to choose the right code for each visit and then how to perform and document a medically appropriate history and exam.
